Video Research Assistant

Generate YouTube video ideas for any topic and save them to Airtable.

Installation

  1. Make sure Claude is on your device and in your terminal.

Skills load from ~/.claude/skills/ when Claude Code starts up — so you need it on your machine first. If you don't have it yet, install it once with the command below, then run claude in any terminal to verify.

    One-time setup
    npm i -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code

    Already have it? Skip ahead.

  2. Paste into Claude Code or into your terminal.

This copies the whole skill folder into ~/.claude/skills/research-owainlewis/ — the SKILL.md plus any scripts, reference docs, or templates the skill ships with. Safe default: works for every skill.

    Faster alternative (instruction-only skills)

Skips the clone and grabs only the SKILL.md file. Don't use this if the skill ships Python scripts, reference markdowns, or asset templates — they won't be downloaded and the skill will fail when it tries to load them.

    Quick install (SKILL.md only)
    Sign up to copy
  3. Restart Claude Code.

Quit and reopen Claude Code (or any other agent that loads from ~/.claude/skills/). New skills are picked up on startup.

  4. Just ask Claude.

Skills auto-activate when your request matches the skill's description — no slash command needed. Trigger phrases live in the skill's own frontmatter; you can read them in the “What this skill does” section above.

What this skill does

Research Skill

Generate video ideas for a given topic and push them into Airtable.

Airtable Configuration

Update these with your own base and table IDs:

  • Base: [Your Base Name] ([your-base-id])
  • Table: [Your Table Name] ([your-table-id])

Process

  1. Research the given topic using web search to understand the current landscape
  2. Identify gaps — what questions are unanswered, what demos are missing
  3. Generate 10 video ideas with titles optimized for YouTube (6-8 words, under 50 characters)
  4. Assign each idea to the most relevant content category
  5. Use the Airtable MCP to create records in the table
  6. Set Status to "Idea" for all new records
  7. Use typecast: true when creating records so select values are matched by name
  8. Return a summary table of what was added

Title Guidelines

  • 6-8 words, under 50 characters
  • Sentence case (capitalize first word and proper nouns only)
  • Simple words a child could read aloud
  • One subject per title
  • "How I" is stronger than "How to"
  • Parenthetical kickers add a second hook: (+ my setup), (honest take), (from scratch)
